50 Years of Evolved Identity: Recounting the ASF/AYF Journey

We often view leadership as a destination—a coveted zenith reached by following a structured hierarchy or satisfying personal ambition. Yet, history has a way of humbling our grandest plans, showing us that true legacy is rarely born of self-assertion, but of courageous obedience and total dependence on a higher call.

At the historic 2025 Jubilee Reunion of the Anglican Students’ Fellowship (ASF/AYF) at OAU, Ile-Ife—themed “The Outpouring”—this truth took centre stage. In a deeply reflective session, Ven. Dr. Richard Ogunlusi took over 250 senior friends and current students through a remarkable 50-year retrospective: “Evolved Identity, Enduring Purpose, and a Lasting Legacy: The Journey from AYF to ASF.”

Dr. Ogunlusi’s reflection was not a dry chronicle of dates, but a poignant case study in spiritual surrender. He recounted entering the university in 1991 with the burning ambition to become the Student Union President—only for a quiet, divine redirection to lead him to a campus fellowship, a life-altering surrender to Christ, and eventually, the fellowship presidency in 1996. His journey underscores a vital truth: when we release our backup plans and embrace adequacy found only in God, we step into a lineage of impact that outlives us.

From its humble beginnings as the Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF) to its evolved identity as ASF, the fellowship’s enduring legacy is anchored on one thing: a relentless commitment to manifesting kingdom power and spreading the Great Light.

Are you ready to look beyond being a mere “seat filler” in your generation and instead build a lasting legacy?
